What Does CMYK Mean — And Why Does My Printed Colour Look Different From My Screen?

Every time I run a workshop, I ask the room the same question. Does anyone know what CMYK stands for?

A few people squint. Most stay very still and hope I don't make eye contact. One or two have a vague memory of seeing the letters somewhere — probably on a printer cartridge — but couldn't tell you what any of them mean.

And yet CMYK shows up everywhere. Your printer asks for it. Your designer mentions it. Even your Canva export settings have an option for it. And if you've ever sent something to print and got it back looking duller, darker, or just slightly wrong compared to what you saw on screen — CMYK is almost certainly the reason why.

Cyan. Magenta. Yellow. Black. That's what the letters stand for.

CMYK colour swatches — the printed reference that tells you what your brand colours will actually look like off the press, not just on a screen.

Your screen makes colour with light. Your printer makes it with ink.

A screen — your phone, your laptop, your monitor — creates colour by mixing light. Red, Green, and Blue light combined in different amounts produces every colour you see on a display. Start with darkness, add light, and you can get to almost anything — including those vivid, almost-glowing colours that look incredible on a screen.

A printer works the opposite way. It starts with white paper and adds ink, and the ink absorbs light rather than emitting it. Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black are the four inks that combine to create every colour in a printed piece. The more ink goes down, the more light gets absorbed, and the darker the result.

Those two systems don't produce the same range of colours. A screen can show colours that ink simply cannot reproduce — particularly the bright, saturated ones. That vivid blue on your monitor? The closest CMYK equivalent is noticeably flatter. Not wrong. Just less.

Why your designer sees something you don't.

There's a condition called tetrachromacy — it's real, and although it's rare, and it turns up more often in artists and designers than in the general population. Most people have three types of colour receptors in their eyes and can perceive around one million colours. Tetrachromats have four, and can perceive up to one hundred million. Research suggests it gets sharpened through artistic training — the more you work with colour, the more of it you learn to see. So even if your designer doesn't officially have tetrachromacy, they can certainly still "see" more colours that you will.

This means when your designer reacts to a colour shift that looks invisible to you, they're quite possibly seeing something you literally can't. The gap between what the screen shows and what comes off the press isn't a technical glitch — for someone who's spent decades working with colour, it's a visible, specific difference. For someone who hasn't, it can look basically the same. Neither person is wrong. They're just not seeing the same thing.

Choose your brand colours from a swatch, not a screen.

This is the thing most people don't hear until a print run comes back wrong. If you choose your brand colours off a screen, you're choosing them in RGB. When they eventually go to print, they get converted — and they may not convert to something you love. The blue you fell in love with on your laptop might print as something noticeably duller, and at that point you've already built your brand around a colour that only exists on a screen.

Choose from a physical CMYK colour swatch first. Then match your digital colours back to those. That way what you see in print is what you chose, or at least very close to it, and not a conversion you didn't expect.
